The aim of the Sustainable Development at the Edge of Europe course is to delve into the themes of socially sustainable development, sustainable environments, and a sustainable future. In an ever-changing world, particularly in the remote regions of Europe, small schools and communities face unique challenges. This course provides strategies for adapting to these changes while fostering a resilient and sustainable future.

At the beginning of the course, participants will explore the fundamentals of sustainable development and examine the intersection of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. We will address the specific challenges faced by small schools and communities in remote areas, focusing on resilience and adaptability. Participants will gain insights into megatrends and future frameworks, and understand how these global shifts impact local communities.

One day is dedicated to visiting Parppei School and Upper Secondary School of Ilomantsi, where innovative approaches such as distance learning are employed to ensure educational continuity. Another day features a visit to Tuupovaara Elementary School, highlighting the challenges and solutions for schools in precarious situations. We will also explore the rich cultural heritage and biodiversity of the region, understanding their role in sustainable development.

Throughout the course, participants will engage in hands-on workshops and field trips, including visits to Petkeljärvi National Park and the historical village of Möhkö. These experiences will provide a deeper understanding of conservation, biodiversity, and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Finally, the course will address the preservation of minority cultures, with visits to significant cultural sites such as St. Hannah's Church. Participants will learn about ecumenical culture and the role of education in maintaining cultural heritage.

By the end of the week, participants will have developed practical skills and strategies to implement sustainable practices in their own communities. They will leave with a renewed understanding of the importance of sustainability at the edge of Europe and the tools to make a difference in their own regions.

Target group are the school management, teachers, special education teachers and all other non-teaching experts and staff working in school education, adult education and VET, especially those working in remote areas.

The course methodology aspires creating an output. Working individually or in groups on a concrete product to be used in your own school. Participants are given time to develop these outputs and the trainers coach and support them throughout the week, if necessary even long after courses have finished as a follow up.

Earn a certificate

The course participants will get a Certificate of Active Attendance.

The competences acquired will be validated by the course organisers on the Europass mobility.
